Mary Ellen serves as the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for Mass General Brigham, bringing nearly 40 years of experience advising C-suite executives on human resources strategy, cultural transformation, equity and inclusion, talent planning and development, change management, leadership effectiveness, executive succession, and board relations. As CHRO, Mary Ellen is responsible for leading Mass General Brigham’s overall human resources strategy in alignment with its mission of delivering exceptional care, teaching the next generation of medical professionals, conducting innovative research, and serving the community. Mary Ellen is accountable for all aspects of human resources including: talent acquisition and development, leadership and organizational effectiveness, workforce enrichment, compensation and benefits, HR operations and technology, and employee relations and labor strategy.
A member of the executive leadership team, Mary Ellen partners closely with the CEO, Board of Trustees, and senior leaders across the enterprise to shape a high-performing, inclusive culture and to ensure the workforce is prepared to meet the evolving needs of patients, caregivers, and communities. She has been instrumental in advancing leadership development, strengthening employee engagement, and driving systemwide transformation initiatives that connect people, strategy, and performance.
Prior to joining Mass General Brigham, Mary Ellen served in HR leadership roles spanning multiple industries, including consumer products, higher education, technology, and for the last 14 years in academic medicine and integrated healthcare systems. Specifically, she served as the CHRO for Rush University Medical Center and the CHRO for Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Florida, where she focused on effecting positive change and growth throughout each organization by leading culture and DEI efforts and delivering business and leadership strategies.
Mary Ellen is a certified executive coach and holds a Master of Science in Organizational Development and a Master of Science in Industrial Labor Relations from Loyola University and a BA in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of Illinois.
