Nursing practice and patient care
Shared governance
Staff Nurse Advisory Council
The Staff Nurse Advisory Council (SNAC) provides a forum for communication between nursing leadership and clinical nurses at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Together, they address important issues that impact care delivery and the practice environment. Staff Nurse Advisory Council members consistently bring forward ideas to enhance the delivery of patient care, improve the practice environment, and enhance staff satisfaction; and play a critical role in bringing information back to their colleagues for dissemination.
Goals:
- Optimize our professional practice model to enhance care in all healthcare settings
- Maximize voice and engagement of staff through Staff Nurse Advisory Council
- Facilitate bi-directional communication between front line clinicians and the Nursing Administration.
- The Nursing Coordinating Council, which is made up of council chairs and co-chairs, is the governing body of the shared governance structure.

Nursing education and professional development
Education Center offerings:
- STRATUS (Simulation, Training, Research and Technology Utilization System): Bi-annual education using the STRATUS team virtually and in-person to gain experience and exposure to pediatric scenarios among the emergency department, acute care, and other interdisciplinary teams (respiratory, outpatient pediatrics, providers).
- NRP/Neonatal Simulation: Healthcare professionals from across the hospital gathered for the annual MVH-MGH Resuscitation Simulation Day for those caring for neonates. This comprehensive training, designed to strengthen clinical skills and build confidence in emergency newborn care-ensuring that every baby born on the island receives the highest stand of care. Using an interdisciplinary approach with providers, respiratory therapists, and nursing, scenarios were presented designed to assist with competency in the most difficult of newborn situations where fast action and high level of skill result in the best outcome.
