Shared governance decision-making structure

The MEE Nursing Department's shared governance structure consists of four councils that report to the Chief Nursing Council. Each council includes representation from nursing clinical areas, education, and informatics and as well as departmental representation as deemed necessary for decision making.

  • Professional Development Council: purpose is to outline, implement, evaluate and maintain educational standards that promote professional growth, development and ongoing clinical competency for nursing staff.
  • Nursing Standards and Practice Council: purpose is to ensure policies, guidelines and procedures are consistent with the philosophy of the Nursing Department, legal and ethical standards of the profession follow all regulatory requirements and are evidence based.
  • Nursing Practice and Quality Council: purpose is of managing data collection for quality improvements on a scheduled basis. The council interprets the quality improvement findings and makes recommendations to improve nursing practice. The Nursing Practice and Quality Council monitors various committee improvements and provides support as needed. Additionally, the council identifies the need for new processes or systems to be monitored through the use of random audits of medical records, bystander audits of nursing practices and other mechanisms.
  • Nursing Informatics Council (NIC): purpose is to facilitate the use of technology in clinical care. Some areas of influence and responsibility are the Electronic Health Record (EHR), Smart IV Pumps, Integrated Monitors and Health Care Provider Communication Systems. For the EHR specifically, members will work to evaluate and make suggestions to optimize its functionality, focusing on uniformity of documentation throughout the hospital, and taking into account department goals, objectives and improvement initiatives.

Awards and recognition

DAISY Award for Nurses
The DAISY Award was created by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who received skillful and compassionate care as he battled autoimmune disease. In his memory, his family continues to honor nurses throughout the world who demonstrate empathy, extraordinary clinical skills, and professionalism while caring for their patients and families. Mass Eye and Ear is proud to partner with The DAISY Foundation and honor individual nurses and nurse teams who go above and beyond providing compassionate care to our patients and their families.
Clinical Recognition Program
The MEE Clinical Recognition Program is a clinical advancement program encouraging nurses to seek professional development and analyze their practice as it relates to three domains of practice: clinician-patient relationship, clinical knowledge and decision-making, and teamwork and collaboration. The program provides a way to recognize and reward nurses for excellence in their practice at the level they have achieved and for continued professional growth to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Commitment to quality and safety

Our Mass General Brigham goal is to lead the nation in providing the highest quality care For Every Patient. In alignment with this system goal, Mass Eye and Ear nurses are contributing to delivering the highest quality care by engaging in strategies that improve the patient’s experience, and nursing quality outcomes, while also reducing mortality and hospital acquired infections. Using a High Reliability framework, nursing strategies are transforming care that is equitable, team-oriented, data driven, and rigorously focused on mitigating risk and continually improving care delivery.

Nursing education and professional development

The Norman Knight Nursing Centers (NKNC) promotes professional development within the nursing department and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support Mass Eye and Ear’s mission, vision, and goals. In addition to providing oversight of the Nursing Department’s onboarding/orientation, competency management, continuing education, and resuscitation/simulation programs, the NKNC supports role development, student placement, and regulatory readiness and provides education consultation and resources.
Nurse Residency Program
The Nurse Residency Program provides a newly licensed nurse with a solid foundation to become an independent and functioning clinician who will deliver safe patient care. The goal of our program is to build what nurses learn in their nursing program by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and tools that they can integrate into their new role as a licensed nurse. This 12-month program encompasses organizational orientation, practice-based experience on the units with preceptors and educators, and supplemental learning activities focusing on topics and activities to develop the professional nurse role and enhance nursing practice, quality and safety.
Certification
MEE encourages nurses to validate their skills, knowledge, and abilities in an area of specialty through certification. MEE nurses can access financial assistance for certification exam fees and preparation courses through resources like Tuition Reimbursement and certification reimbursement guidelines.
