John Bertram Society

Salem Hospital's beginnings date back to 1874, when Captain John Bertram gifted property on 31 Charter Street to the town of Salem, for the purpose of caring for residents as well as sailors who were returning from many months at sea. This was during the era when Salem enjoyed commercial prosperity as a leader in international trade with the Far East, Europe and Russia. Captain Bertram’s gift represents a true philanthropic vision that has withstood the test of time. Salem Hospital has served the health needs of the North Shore community for over 140 years.

Leaving a legacy through planned giving

A healthy community is a strong community. Salem Hospital is fortunate to have had so many individuals give so generously to insure our community’s health for the present and future generations. The planned giving society, the 1874 Charter Society was created in 1993 to recognize those who have made planned gifts in support of our mission.

In honor of the enduring legacy of Captain Bertram and the hospital’s 150th anniversary opening its doors to patients in 1874, the society was renamed to the Bertram Society in 2024.

Members of the Bertram Society receive special recognition and are invited to a variety of educational and social events each year. We invite our friends and donors to explore the many planned giving options for supporting Salem Hospital, and to contact us if any of these might be appropriate in meeting your personal, financial, and charitable goals.

If you have already included Salem Hospital in your estate gifting plans, please let us know so that we can thank you and properly recognize you in our Bertram Society.
