Give a gift of strength
A donor-advised fund is a smart vehicle to manage and direct your giving — and you can make a meaningful impact by including Spaulding as a top priority.
Spaulding gratefully welcomes charitable support through donor-advised funds (“DAF”), which are often managed by financial services firms (Fidelity, Vanguard, etc.) or non-profit community foundations (i.e., the Boston Foundation). If you’d like to contribute to Spaulding, please direct your DAF administrator to send your distribution to:
Spaulding Rehabilitation
Gift Processing
P.O. BOX 411453
Boston, MA 02241-1453
When initiating a DAF distribution, please use Tax ID 04-2551124 for Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Corporation (300 First Ave, Charlestown, MA 02129).
If you or your DAF administrator have questions about making a distribution from your fund, please call us at 617-952-6880.
Note: If you are using a donor-advised fund to make charitable contributions, please be informed that according to federal tax regulation, no donor, donor advisor or individual related to the donor(s) and/or donor advisor(s) can receive any goods, services or more than incidental benefit, including but not limited to, benefit tickets, school tuition, membership fees, or goods purchased at an auction. If you would like to support a Spaulding event using a donor-advised fund, please contact us for guidance on how to best make your gift.
When you become a monthly donor, your generosity goes to work immediately — and gives Spaulding the flexibility to respond to the most pressing needs of our patients and care teams throughout the year. Your ongoing support has an impact at every level:
- $15 per month: Helps provide transportation, meals, and other basic support items for families struggling to manage while a loved one receives care.
- $25 per month: Helps us subscribe to innovative software for assessing and treating patients, aiding them in getting back to everyday activities (like driving) sooner.
- $40 per month: Supports adaptive sports activities for patients to find community and healing through therapeutic recreation.
- $85 per month: Supports the purchase of leading-edge rehabilitation equipment to assist in more effective recoveries. With your monthly gift of $85 or more, you will be recognized as an annual leadership-level donor to Spaulding.*
Monthly giving is the easiest and most convenient way to have year-round impact. By setting up your monthly gift today, you’ll know your support is working every day, whenever it is needed most.
* Your support for Spaulding’s Annual Fund is used to address the hospital’s most pressing needs and opportunities. The examples above are representative of various ways your generosity can support our patients and care teams.
Double the impact of your donation to Spaulding by leveraging your employer’s matching gift program.
Many companies offer employer-matched giving as an employee benefit. See if your company (or your spouse's) matches charitable gifts below or contact your employer’s Human Resources office. Even gifts you made earlier this year may qualify for matching!
As a Spaulding employee, you know the power of hope, health, and recovery. Every day, you bring your best efforts to help our patients find their strength. When you join the Strength Fund — our employee giving program — you help us do even more together.

Your giving matters
Gifts of all sizes add up to big impact when we all contribute.
Your tax-deductible gifts as a Strength Fund member will support the entire Spaulding Rehabilitation, serving our shared mission by providing flexible resources to improve patient outcomes and advance research priorities.
If you prefer, you can designate your gift for any one of Spaulding’s locations or programs — supporting the Spaulding community and initiatives that matter most to you.
However you choose to give, your contribution will make a huge difference for our patients and our programs.
For more information on employee giving through the Strength Fund, contact Megan Rollins at marollins@mgb.org.
When planning for your future, you can also have an impact on the future of rehabilitation care.
Naming Spaulding as a beneficiary in your retirement plan is a great way to support our important mission of transforming rehabilitation medicine. IRAs, 401Ks, and other retirement plan assets can be valuable, tax-efficient vehicles for charitable giving.
Retirement plan assets often come with estate and income taxes that leave little left over for heirs. However, by designating Spaulding as a remainder beneficiary of your retirement account, you can support meaningful work while minimizing your family’s tax burden.
How to contribute
Making a retirement gift plan to advance rehabilitation medicine is simple: Just add Spaulding to your “beneficiary designation” information on file with your retirement plan administrator at any time.
Are you age 70.5 or older?
If so, you can use your traditional or Roth IRA to make a gift now to Spaulding. In addition, certain individuals age 73 or older may have their gift count as part of their required minimum distribution.
There are two types of lifetime gifts you can make through your IRA:
First, you can have up to a total of $105,000 transferred directly from your IRA to Spaulding each year, that in most cases is not reported as taxable income.
Second, it is now possible to make a one-time gift of up to $53,000 to establish a charitable gift annuity, making fixed and guaranteed payments to you and/or your spouse for life.
In both cases, you would not be able to claim an income tax charitable deduction; however, you also would not have to report the distribution from your IRA as taxable income. Therefore, these “qualified charitable distributions” from your IRA can actually provide a tax benefit even for those who don’t otherwise itemize their deductions.
Spaulding values partnership. Every day, we are partnering with a variety of organizations to ensure our care is top-notch. Equally important, philanthropic partnerships help us meet our vision at the highest possible level, providing the funds necessary to advance our research, care, and educational aims. The generosity of foundations plays a significant role by investing in our future. Please join us in making a profound impact on the exceptional community Spaulding serves.
For more information about foundation giving, contact Susan Fugliese, Director of Foundation Relations, at 339-221-2462 or sfugliese@mgb.org.

Make your special day extra meaningful by donating your birthday by fundraising for Spaulding.
It’s easy to donate your birthday to benefit Spaulding patients and families — see below for some ideas. Then simply let your friends and family know that a Spaulding donation will be the most meaningful gift they can give.
Those donations will help improve the quality of life for people recovering from, or learning to live fully with, illness, injury, or loss of ability. Through this generous gesture, you are an active contributor to rehabilitation medicine and research — and to incredible recoveries. Thank you!
Ways to donate
- Host an event
- Get creative! Have another idea in mind? Go for it!
- Make your own gift: If you aren’t up for crowdfunding but want to support Spaulding yourself, you can make a personal gift online today.
Helpful tips
- Set a meaningful and realistic goal: $100 for Spaulding’s 100% amazing caregivers; $200 for your birthday on the 20th of the month; $400 for your 40th birthday — do what feels right for you. Remember that many people will feel most comfortable chipping in $5 or $10.
- Share your story: People will love to hear why Spaulding’s mission matters to you. Make it personal!
- Think outside the box: If you’re looking for fun, unique ways to inspire your friends and family, try a creative idea like pledging to run a mile for every $10 raised, doing a silly-but-safe dare for $50, or hosting a virtual event for your supporters.
By including Spaulding in your estate plans, you have a profound impact for generations to come — and inspire others with your legacy of generosity.
Naming Spaulding in your will or trust is a simple and flexible way to make a deferred gift to Spaulding that reflects your enduring values and philanthropic priorities.
Through your estate plans, you can make a gift of a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate once all of your other distributions have been fulfilled as you wish.

Earmarking your gift

There are a variety of ways to support Spaulding that can generate an attractive, reliable income stream for you and your family. Moreover, these special gift vehicles enable you to give more to Spaulding than you otherwise thought possible.
Common life income options:
- Charitable gift annuity: In exchange for your charitable gift of $10,000 or more to Spaulding, you receive fixed and guaranteed payments for life, based on the age of those receiving the income. Payments can begin immediately, or can be deferred one or more years for a higher payout rate.
- Charitable remainder trust: This flexible option pays income to you or your other beneficiaries, either for life or a term of up to 20 years. Payments from a charitable remainder trust could grow over time, depending on a number of factors.
With both of these gift vehicles, donors typically enjoy an income tax charitable deduction equal to a portion of the gift amount, and avoid any up-front capital gains taxes.
Benefit Spaulding now and your heirs later
- Charitable lead trust: Establishing a lead trust will pay income to Spaulding now with your heirs receiving the remainder in the future. This type of gift can offer significant gift or estate tax savings while having an immediate impact on Spaulding’s patients and families.
We encourage you to consult your own advisors about these life income options. For more information, to receive a sample gift illustration based on your age, or to explore how these gift plans could work for you, please contact John MacRae, Senior Director of Principal and Major Gifts, at 617-306-2394 or jcmacrae@mgb.org.
A gift of real estate can be your way to leave a lasting imprint at Spaulding.
Donating property that you love for a purpose that’s near and dear to your heart can hold special meaning… and offer significant tax benefits. By donating all or part of your real property to Spaulding, you may be able to reduce your capital gains tax, receive an income tax deduction, and play a pivotal role in Spaulding’s future of transforming rehabilitation medicine.
How to contribute
A gift of real estate may be right for you if you:
- Own real estate that you no longer need
- Want to donate your home now, but continue living in it
- Own real estate that you’re willing to sell for a reduced price
- Own real estate you’re willing to donate in exchange for an income stream
- Want to save on income and other taxes
There are many options for donating your primary home, second home, commercial building, vacant land, farm or other real estate to Spaulding. Confer with your financial advisor to explore the best gift option(s) for you.
Your generosity can change lives... and can make good sense for your financial and tax plans. Donating gifts of securities — appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds — and other property can have many benefits for you and make a meaningful impact for the patients we serve.
Gifts of stock and other securities typically entitle a donor to a federal income tax charitable deduction and capital gains tax savings for securities owned for at least a year. We encourage you to consult your own advisors to discuss your gift plans and tax implications.
Convenient ways to contribute
We make giving easy, and can help you determine the best way to contribute with securities and other property.
Common security gifts:
- Publicly traded stock
- Mutual fund shares
- Corporate and municipal bonds
Other types of property gifts:
- Private stock
- Partnership interests/stock options
- Real estate
- Tangible personal property (e.g., artwork, rare coins, certain medical equipment, etc.)
Our development professionals will work closely with you and your advisors to help determine whether your gift of property is suitable for donation to Spaulding.
