Dr. Amato came to BWH and Harvard Medical School (HMS) in 1999, when he was recruited to be the Chief of the Neuromuscular Division and Director of Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory. He is a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical and was named the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Distinguished Chair in Neurology in 2019. He started and directed the MGB Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship training program for many years. He currently serves as Director of Neuromuscular Research at Mass General Brigham.

He is the recipient of many local, national, and international awards and has served on numerous committees. He received the BWH Distinguished Clinician Award, BWH Clinical Excellence Award, the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine's (AANEM) Distinguished Researcher Award.  He has been elected by peers as one of The Best Doctors in America since 1997. He has been Chair of the Science Committee of the AANEM and American Neuromuscular Foundation. He serves as a member of the FDA Medical Advisory Committee: Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee (CTGTAC). He was the Associate Editor of Neurology in charge of neuromuscular submissions from June 2013 to Jan 2024. Dr. Amato is an author or co-author on over 380 published articles, chapters, and books. He co-wrote 5 chapters on Muscle Disorders, Inflammatory Myopathies, Neuromuscular Junction Disorders, and on Peripheral Neuropathies in the most recent editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and have written one the leading textbooks in the field, Neuromuscular Disorders, now in it’s 3rd edition.
