Jamil R Azzi, MD, PhD

Jamil Roumanos Azzi, MD, PhD is the John P. Merrill, MD, and Charles B. Carpenter, MD, Endowed Chair in Transplantation Medicine and Director of the Transplantation Research Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves as Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Azzi is an immunologist and physician–scientist who leads an NIH-funded laboratory focused on elucidating the immune-regulatory arm of the immune system in transplantation and autoimmunity, with the goal of developing safer, more precise, and mechanism-based therapeutic strategies. His work has pioneered the integration of engineering, immunology, and translational science to address critical unmet needs in transplantation, leading to multiple translational initiatives and spin-off programs aimed at improving patient care.

His laboratory applies genomic and proteomic approaches to develop diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers for transplant recipients and inflammatory diseases, as well as tools to assess immune function in immunosuppressed patients. Work from his lab. led to the development of the EKTRA test, representing a major advance in noninvasive monitoring of kidney transplant patients.
