Rodrigo A Alvarez, MD

Dr. Rodrigo Alvarez joined Mass Eye and Ear as an Ophthalmology Hospitalist in 2022. In this role, he provides clinical care for Mass Eye and Ear Emergency patients as well as consultations for patients admitted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Women's Faulkner Hospital. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he teaches and supervises clinical fellows and ophthalmology residents in the Mass Eye and Ear Emergency Department.

Dr. Alvarez earned his MD summa cum laude from Universidad de Chile, where he then completed his ophthalmology residency. Following the completion of his clinical training, Dr. Alvarez joined the faculty at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He subsequently completed his vitreoretinal clinical fellowship at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. He came to Mass Eye and Ear to perform a retinal research fellowship before returning to Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he then was appointed chair of the Ophthalmology Department.
