Nicholas L. Berlin, MD, MPH, MS, is a staff surgeon in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His practice blends an individualized approach to patient-centered care with the latest techniques and evidence in reconstructive surgery. He has expertise in reconstructive microsurgery, specifically focused on microsurgical breast reconstruction. His clinical expertise also spans implant-based and oncoplastic approaches to breast reconstruction, as well as peripheral nerve surgery and gender-affirming surgery.
Dr. Berlin is also a health services researcher who focuses on delivery systems innovations, Medicare payment reform, and healthcare affordability. He brings more than 10 years of research experience, including clinical, health services, and health policy research to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Surgery. He has master’s degrees in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, as well as Health and Healthcare Research from Yale University and the University of Michigan.
Before arriving in Boston, he did his residency training and fellowships at the University of Michigan, where he completed a highly competitive two-year fully funded health services research fellowship with independent funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs called the National Clinician Scholars Program. He was also a post-doctoral fellow in the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy, as well as the Center for Evaluating Health Reform at the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.
He has demonstrated expertise in evaluating major policy reforms on quality and spending outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries. His work has been featured in leading journals for healthcare, policy, decision science, and plastic surgery, including JAMA, Health Affairs, Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Medical Decision Making, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has a portfolio of projects with colleagues at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
