Dr. Bulterys earned his MD and PhD through the UCLA-Caltech Medical Scientist Training Program. He completed his doctoral research in molecular biology in the laboratory of Jeff F. Miller, where he developed expertise in microbial pathogenesis and drug discovery. His work established a high-throughput screening platform that identified new therapeutic leads against the Tier 1 select agents Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei. His training was supported by a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and an NIH/NIAID F30 Fellowship.
He subsequently completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology, a chief residency in clinical pathology, and fellowships in hematopathology and dermatopathology, all at Stanford Health Care. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, hematopathology, and dermatopathology, and currently practices on both the dermatopathology and hematopathology services. His clinical expertise encompasses inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic diseases of the skin, with a particular focus on cutaneous lymphomas.
His research focuses on infection-associated cancers, cutaneous hematolymphoid neoplasms, inflammatory disorders, and neglected and emerging infections. He is particularly interested in developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and expanding access to care in resource-limited settings. He is also committed to mentoring and educating medical students, residents, and fellows.
