Tracy A. Balboni, MD, MPH, FAAHPM is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School, Vice Chair of Education for the Mass General Brigham Department of Radiation Oncology, Program Director of the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program, and Co-Director of the Harvard Initiative on Health, Spirituality and Religion. She received her MD from Harvard Medical School, completed residency training in the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program, subspecialty training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and an MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is board-certified in both Radiation Oncology and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Balboni's clinical practice and research focus on improving the care of patients with advanced cancer through innovations in metastatic bone and spine disease, supportive and palliative radiation oncology, and whole-person cancer care.
An internationally recognized clinician, Dr. Balboni has led influential research spanning metastatic bone and spine disease, palliative radiation oncology, and spirituality and health. Her work has advanced predictive models for skeletal complications, informed evidence-based management of bone and spinal metastases, and helped establish national standards of care, including serving as Chair of the ASTRO Clinical Practice Guideline Committee on Bone Metastases. She is also widely recognized for pioneering empirical research on spirituality in serious illness, helping establish spirituality and spiritual care as measurable, clinically relevant determinants of patient-centered outcomes and advancing conceptual and methodological approaches to studying spirituality across oncology, palliative medicine, and public health. Through her clinical research, educational leadership, national service, and mentorship, she seeks to improve the quality, value, and humanity of care for patients with serious illness.
