Dr. Michael Cohen is a fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologist at Mass Eye and Ear and an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in caring for children with hearing loss and chronic ear disease. He directs the Multidisciplinary Pediatric Hearing Loss Clinic, which sees children referred from across New England, the United States and abroad. He also directs the Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship at Mass Eye and Ear.
Dr. Cohen treats children with conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, cholesteatoma, eardrum perforations, and chronic or recurrent ear infections. He performs cochlear implantation, bone conduction implant surgery and aural atresia repair. He also offers nonsurgical ear molding for newborns with ear shape differences. He was an early adopter of endoscopic ear surgery and has helped build one of the most experienced practices of its kind in the country. With this approach, many ear procedures can be done through the ear canal instead of through a larger incision behind the ear.
Dr. Cohen is the principal investigator at Mass Eye and Ear for SONIX, a pioneering clinical trial testing gene therapy to restore hearing in young children with sensorineural hearing loss caused by changes in the GJB2 gene, the most common genetic cause of congenital hearing loss. He has written more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and given more than 100 invited talks at regional, national and international meetings.
His other research covers several areas:
- Genetic hearing loss and hearing loss caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Outcomes for children with single-sided hearing loss and for children with Down syndrome
- The use of artificial intelligence to diagnose ear infections; his group's technology has been licensed for commercial development
He is a founding member and past president of the American Endoscopic Ear Surgery Study Group and sits on the executive board of the International Working Group on Endoscopic Ear Surgery. He also serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Pediatric Otolaryngology.
Dr. Cohen is a committed advocate for children with hearing loss and their families. He is a founding board member of the Massachusetts CMV Coalition and he helped establish targeted newborn CMV screening at Mass General Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. In 2017 he was awarded an Honorable Mention for National Compassionate Caregiver of the Year by the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare. Boston Magazine and Castle Connolly have named him a Top Doctor every year since 2017.

Dr. Michael Cohen is the best of the best!!! My daughter [redacted] has Down Syndrome and gets anxious when she has a doctor's appointment. But Dr. Michael Cohen is her favorite doctor. She actually asks to go see him. He helps her so much and always takes time to explain things well and put her at ease. He is not only a wonderful and brilliant doctor he is also a thoughtful and caring person. He is exceptional and MEE is fortunate to have him on their team!

Dr cohen is amazing!! We seen him when my daughter had tonsillitis and had to stay in hospital for 3 days. He is an amazing doctor and so kind hearted and really cared about my daughter. This was her follow up and it resulted in her having to be scheduled for surgery. But he made sure it was the right step and explained it all and answered all my questions and my husbands. I would 100% recommend dr cohen

Dr. Cohen was so welcoming and wonderful with myself and my daughter.
