Dr. Elder received an MD with distinction from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and was Vice President of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed general surgery training at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a residency in urology, including chief resident, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Elder completed pediatric urology fellowships at Johns Hopkins and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He was director of pediatric urology at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital for 21 years, and tenured Carter Kissell Professor of Urology at Case Western University School of Medicine. Subsequently, Dr. Elder was appointed chief of urology and chief of pediatric urology, Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, MI. In 2015 he was appointed Chief of Pediatric Urology and was the first board certified pediatric urologist at Partners HealthCare (now Mass General Brigham).
Dr. Elder was the pediatric urology section editor of The Journal of Urology from 1998-2007. Currently, he is on the editorial board of European Urology, Pediatric Surgery International and Frontiers in Pediatrics. He is a member of honorary academic societies Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons and American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. Dr. Elder served as president of the Society for Pediatric Urology (SPU) and the American Academy of Pediatric Urologists (AAPU). He was the chair of the first American Urological Association Pediatric Vesicoureteral Reflux Guidelines Committee and was the facilitator of the second AUA Reflux Guidelines Committee, which published updated recommendations in 2010. He was the section head, pediatric urology, AUA Online Robotic Surgery Handbook and is a reviewer for the European Association of Urology Pediatric Urology Guidelines. Dr. Elder has been visiting professor or visiting surgeon at 55 U.S. and international medical centers. Dr. Elder has > 160 peer-reviewed publications, edited or authored 6 books, 155 book chapters, and authored the pediatric urology section of the Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics from 2000 to 2018. He has been listed in Boston Magazine Top Docs from 2016 to 2026 and Castle Connolly Top Doctors from 2002-2026.

This visit was for a second opinion for my son. And I asked my son his opinion on who he felt comfortable with from the first doctor versus the second doctor, which was Dr. Elder. And my son mentioned how he felt that Dr. Elder did a more thorough exam and was able to explain things that were a little bit easier to understand. And so from a child's perspective, that is what the feedback was. And from my husband's feedback, who was in the visit, he said that he felt comfortable with the visit as someone who's not in health care, for I am in healthcare. So I understood a lot before going.

Dr. Elder was extremely patient with us, two concerned new parents, and took the time to explain everything and answer all or our questions. We were ended up very confident in making the right decision with his guidance, and his offer to be in touch following our child's procedure was very reassuring. Overall an excellent experience.

A great professional. I was worried because my son's pediatrician couldn't see his testicle. And this professional, with just a pelvic exam, was able to locate the testicles and showed me that everything was fine. He seems very patient and attentive.

The provider was very thorough in his assessment. He reviewed the ultrasounds during our visit. He gave an easy to comprehend overview of the anatomy of concern. General percentages of outcomes were discussed and a follow-up plan after delivery was made.
