Dr. Efstathiou is the Program Director for the Genitourinary (GU) Radiation Oncology Program within the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute (MGBCI), Vice-Chair for Faculty Enrichment in the Mass General Brigham Department of Radiation Oncology, and the Jenot W. and William U. Shipley Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, his MD from HMS, and his DPhil from the University of Oxford, and completed residency training in the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program.
His active clinical practice focuses on the treatment of patients with prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, and other genitourinary cancers. He is deeply committed to delivering exceptional, patient-centered care and is an internationally recognized leader in genitourinary malignancies and radiation oncology. His career has focused on improving outcomes for patients with GU cancers through clinical innovation, clinical trials, translational research, global outreach, advocacy, mentorship, and multidisciplinary care. His research has helped shape clinical guidelines and has advanced bladder-preserving approaches, including trimodality therapy, in bladder cancer, as well as the evaluation of emerging technologies, including proton therapy, in prostate cancer.
Dr. Efstathiou currently serves as Co-Chair of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Genitourinary Steering Committee, which oversees the national clinical trials portfolio for GU cancers, and as Vice President of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Foundation. He is also involved with patient advocacy organizations, including the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN), and serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Coalition (MPCC).
His commitment to clinical excellence, service, and mentorship has been recognized through numerous awards and honors, including the A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award from HMS, the Jack Colbert Memorial Award from MPCC, MGH Mentor with Distinction, and Health Professional of the Game for the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
