• As a retired faculty physician I am both very aware of expected medical care and, I must confess, that at times I tend to be critical. On this occasion I do not have an iota of criticism. Nothing that happened last week at MGH evoked anything but admiration, gratitude and respect. To present as a patient with a tumor of my very own was a new experience. And I cannot state emphatically enough that my visit to MGH exceeded all my expectations and surely lived up to the world-wide reputation of MGH as a leading provider of health care. Dr. Gao towers in my estimation. It is no surprise that his expertise is of the highest level. But beyond this, his clarity of explanation and his radiant kindness deserve more praise and thanks than I can verbalize. Furthermore this was not limited to my time at MGH; one day later a new lab report arrived which included one rather unwelcome number. This caused Dr. Gao to chase me down on my cell phone to continue and modify our dialog. My sincere thanks to Dr. Gao and his staff and to MGH.

• The question asked in that manner is ambiguous. I met with a team of doctors, the oncology team, and also met with a nurse to take vital signs before the main meeting. I guess you're looking for a general experience. Overall at the end of my day when I left the facility, I felt absolutely confident in my choosing this team over the team that I was given at Dana-Farber. I had a certain awareness of the conflicts between the two institutions and I must tell you that I was not entirely confident of my partnership with the oncology team at the other institution. I came for this visit to gain certainty and I couldn't have asked for a better result

• MGH is probably the best hospital on earth but I couldn't help but think that recommendations made by doctors are guided by things other than what is best for the patient. They recommended surgery, or radiation/hormone treatment, for my prostate surgery. There was very little discussion about focal therapy which is far less invasive and with fewer side effects. I feel I was steered away from using focal by doctors who only use other treatments for prostate surgery.
