Dr. Lydia Helliwell is an Associate Surgeon in the Division of Plastic Surgery and is the Associate Program Director for the Harvard Plastic Surgery Residency Program. She holds a subspecialty certificate in Hand Surgery. Her clinical interests include treating nerve, tendon and bony injuries of the hand and wrist, peripheral nerve injuries and compression, complex upper and lower extremity reconstruction, and the management of sarcoma and other oncologic defects. Dr. Helliwell became a plastic surgeon because she enjoys the long-term relationships that she develops with patients when treating upper and lower extremity problems and the complex problem solving involved in reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Helliwell’s research focuses on assessment in graduate medical education, microsurgical simulation and orthoplastic reconstruction of the upper and lower extremity after trauma and oncologic resection.

Dr. Helliwell is the best surgeon I have ever met. Like other reviews say, she really does make you feel like the only appointment she has that day. She is thorough and is always dotting her i's and crossing her t's when she sees patients. She even walked me out of the appointment when I had to schedule my next visit. Her team is also very collaborative and communicates well with each other. I feel that I am in the best hands when I'm with her and she truly earns the respect of her patients. She is the epitome of an exceptional care provider.
