Dr. Erika Rangel is a general and acute care surgeon and surgical intensivist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Her clinical practice focuses on emergency general surgery, general surgery, and the care of critically ill surgical patients. She sees outpatients at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and cares for inpatients at both MGH and NWH.
A California native, Dr. Rangel received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. She began her general surgery residency at Stanford University and completed her training at Brigham and Women's Hospital, with additional fellowship training in surgical critical care. She is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and serves as the Mass General Brigham Academic Medical Center Medical Director of Well-Being for Surgical and Perioperative Services and as an Associate Program Director for the Massachusetts General Hospital General Surgery Residency Program.
Dr. Rangel leads a nationally recognized research program on pregnancy, parenthood, and physician well-being, including clinical trials of interventions to reduce burnout and research on workplace support, pregnancy complications, and workforce retention. She has also led national policy efforts supporting pregnant and parenting surgeons.
