Dr. Sheu is Director of Foregut Surgery at Mass General Brigham, Program Director of the Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatrics Fellowship, and an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Sheu graduated from Harvard College, earned a doctorate in immunology as a Marshall Scholar at the University of Oxford, and received his MD from Harvard Medical School. He completed his general surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by fellowship training in advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Sheu’s clinical practice focuses on laparoscopic and robotic surgery for hiatal and paraesophageal hernias, gastroesophageal reflux disease, primary and revisional bariatric surgery, and complex abdominal wall hernia repair.
Dr. Sheu leads the Mass General Brigham Foregut Program, which brings together expertise in gastroenterology, thoracic surgery, and minimally invasive GI surgery to provide multidisciplinary care for benign disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, swallowing disorders, and hiatal and paraesophageal hernias. He also serves as Program Director for the Mass General Brigham Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatrics Fellowship, a nationally recognized training program whose graduates have gone on to leadership positions in surgery across the country.
In addition, Dr. Sheu is a Principal Investigator in the Laboratory for Surgical and Metabolic Research, where he leads an NIH R01-funded translational research program investigating how the gut microbiome and its metabolites contribute to improvements in type 2 diabetes and obesity following bariatric surgery. His research has received recognition and funding from multiple professional and scientific organizations, including the American Surgical Association, and has led to several patents and industry support aimed at translating these discoveries into new therapies.
