Dr. Thomas C. Tsai is a minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). His clinical interests include laparoscopic and robotic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease; hiatal (paraesophageal) hernias; complex abdominal wall reconstruction; metabolic bariatric surgery; and upper endoscopy. He leads the application of clinical innovations to gastrointestinal conditions including LINX (magnet sphincter augmentation), near-infrared image-guided surgery, laparoscopic common bile duct exploration with Spyglass; and adoption of preoperative surgical artificial intelligence (AI).
Dr. Tsai is a national expert on surgical quality and health policy. He is the Medical Director for Health Policy Research for the American College of Surgeons. He has led health policy efforts in two Presidential Administrations, having served in the US Department of Health and Human Services and in the White House. He directs the Healthcare Quality and Outcomes Lab at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where his research focuses on evaluating health policy and systems-level interventions to improve the quality and value of surgical care.
Dr. Tsai received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, and his MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed a general surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an advanced minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery fellowship Massachusetts General Hospital.

I never felt rush. The physician really listed and at the end of appointment he informed me he was going to get operative nots and CT scans done at different hospital so he could receive them rather than just read office notes. He scheduled GI testing at hospital closer to my home and said after he reviewed everything we would do a zoom meeting to go over everything which i appreciate as i live 2hours away

The PA and Doctor were very helpful. It wasn't as easy to get an answer to a question afterward, but I did finally get an answer. My Brigham's dermatologist created the problem, so I'm not giving the entire organization a 10, but Dr Tsai and the PA were very good.

Dr Tsai is a terrific surgeon who gives me confidence in my care with him. He did a very complex surgery on me [redacted] and he will do another less complex one on [redacted]. I am grateful to have found such an excellent doctor. He is also very smart and personable. I am most happy that he actually listens to me which is rare bc I am a female.
