Dr. Willers earned his MD from the University of Hamburg Medical School in Germany in 1994 and completed his residency in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2005. He subsequently joined the faculty as a clinician-scientist, leading an NCI-funded research laboratory dedicated to advancing precision medicine in radiation oncology. From 2016 to 2025, Dr. Willers served as Director of Thoracic Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Willers' clinical practice focuses on the treatment of patients with thoracic malignancies, including lung cancers, thymoma, and mesothelioma. He is dedicated to multidisciplinary care that emphasizes competence, collaboration, communication, care coordination, and compassion. Dr. Willers has extensive expertise in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and proton therapy, as well as the management of brain metastases, and has been a clinical leader in these areas since 2008. He has also specialized in advancing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques to reduce radiation-related side effects while maintaining excellent tumor control. His research spans clinical, translational, physics, and radiation biology, with the overarching goal of advancing precision radiation medicine. By integrating cutting-edge biological therapies with highly precise radiation treatment, his work seeks to improve cancer cure rates, extend survival, and maximize patients' quality of life.
