Specialized care for all types of adrenal tumors
Adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and make hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine. While adrenal tumors are rarely cancerous, they may affect your health and require treatment.
Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute specialists are highly skilled in evaluating and managing adrenal tumors. We work as a multidisciplinary team to improve outcomes for patients.
Our approach to adrenal tumor care
We recommend that all adrenal tumors undergo investigation to assess the potential for cancer. Our expert adrenal endocrinologists conduct these diagnostics using blood and urine testing and imaging techniques.
Imaging tests include:
- Adrenal protocol MRI and CT scans
- Angiography and adrenal venous sampling
- MIBG scan (nuclear imaging)
- Octreotide radionuclide scan
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
You may need surgery to remove an adrenal gland (adrenalectomy) if a tumor is cancerous or makes excess hormones. At Mass General Brigham, 94% of adrenalectomies are performed through a minimally invasive approach, which enables patients to heal faster with fewer complications.
Our specialized surgeons work closely on multidisciplinary medical teams to recommend the best type of surgery for your unique needs. Surgery types include:
- Laparoscopic adrenalectomy, using tiny tools inserted into small incisions
- Robotic adrenalectomy, using a robotic device and minor incisions
- Retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy, to remove a gland through an incision in the back
- Open adrenalectomy, to remove a large tumor through an abdominal incision
Medications and radiation therapy can kill cancer cells after surgery. These treatments also help if cancer returns or spreads. Nonsurgical treatments for adrenal tumors include:
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Proton therapy
- Radiation therapy
- Radiofrequency ablation
