Family-centered approach
Clinical specialists from endocrinology, oncology, surgery, pathology and radiology at Mass General Brigham for Children work together to treat a range of thyroid disorders by applying an innovative approach to surgical and medical therapy. This integrated approach provides optimal, individualized care for each patient, reducing complications and improving outcomes.
Part of Mass General Brigham for Children
Internationally recognized expertise in diseases of the thyroid
The Pediatric Thyroid Surgery Program at Mass General Brigham for Children is one of only a few such programs in the United States, dedicated exclusively to thyroid surgical problems in children. Our internationally recognized experts provide family centered care to patients with all forms of thyroid disorders, including:
- Grave’s disease
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
- Hyperthyroidism
- Hypothyroidism
- Thyroid cancer
- Thyroid nodules
Increased surgical volume and experience result in fewer surgical complications. Thyroid surgery is particularly delicate because nerves connected to the vocal cords and the blood supply to the parathyroid glands (tiny glands surrounding the thyroid that control the body’s calcium level) are susceptible to injury during the procedure. Mass General surgeons have extensive experience performing thyroid surgery and care for more tha1,000 patients each year.
Partnering for optimal care
Dedicated thyroid surgeons at Mass General Brigham perform these operations frequently in adults. However, children have different anatomical and physiologic considerations. Thyroid disorders requiring surgery are less common in children. The Pediatric Thyroid Surgery Program combines an experienced adult thyroid surgeon with a pediatric surgeon who is an expert at dealing with the unique aspects of pediatric patients. This collaboration allows us to provide the highest quality of care available for children with diseases of the thyroid.
Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program
The Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Program was created to optimize the care, outcomes, and experiences of adolescent and young adult patients (ages 15-39) with cancer through integrated care delivery, research, and education.
