Our approach to stress and trauma care

As one of the country’s most established behavioral health programs, we have the experts and services to help you or your child manage life stressors and traumatic events.
Complete understanding of the complexity of PTSD

While PTSD is often associated with military service or first responders, anyone who experiences a traumatic or highly stressful event can be affected. Symptoms may include flashbacks, anxiety, hypervigilance, and persistent fear long after the event has passed.

Evidence-based therapies, medications, and structured stress management programs can help reduce symptoms and support recovery. We offer comprehensive treatment options for PTSD.

Trauma-focused care tailored to adults

We offer dedicated services for adults coping with stress or PTSD, including:

  • Trauma-focused psychotherapy, including PE, CPT, and DBT
  • Programs focused on civilian, first responder, and military trauma
  • Programs focused on adults with histories of childhood abuse and neglect
  • Individual and group therapy
  • Family education and involvement, when appropriate
  • Medications
  • Residential care, inpatient treatment, or trauma-focused PHP

Our stage-based approach to trauma recovery supports healing over time and may help if you are coping with past trauma or abuse.

Specialized care for children with stress and PTSD

Our pediatric behavioral health experts specialize in treating PTSD and related disorders in children and teens. Our Child Stress and PTSD Program includes:

  • Evidence-based therapies, including DBT+PE and EMDR
  • A DBT program for teens and young adults
  • Therapeutic academic settings for adolescents with trauma-related challenges
  • Medication treatment
  • Partial hospital programs
Dedicated trauma program for first responders

McLean Hospital provides specialized care for first responders who experience trauma, depression, substance use disorders, and other related issues.

Services include:

  • Inpatient treatment for life crises and substance use disorders, including detoxification
  • Outpatient programs providing individual and group therapy for all genders
  • Residential treatment program
  • Dedicated AA meetings for members of law enforcement
  • Therapy groups that focus on stress management, family impact, resiliency, healthy sleep, as well as medical complications and pain management
  • Priority access to all other McLean mental health specialty programs throughout our campuses
Trauma Partial Hospital Program (PHP)

Our Trauma PHP offers tailored, specialized treatment for PTSD, dissociative identity disorder, and other related mental health issues. Care targets the difficulties faced at each stage of the trauma recovery process.

PHP helps those who need intensive treatment, but don’t need 24/7 inpatient care. Patients attend group treatment sessions during weekdays. When appropriate, our care team helps you explore and process past traumatic experiences. We offer therapies that help minimize the intensity of intrusive memories, eliminate avoidance behaviors, and address difficult emotions, such as fear, guilt, anger, and shame.

We offer both virtual and in-person PHP options, depending on insurance coverage.
