Individualized care for testicular cancer
Our approach to treating testicular cancer
New patients are generally seen within a week of referral.
At your first visit, you will meet a multidisciplinary team that may include urologists and surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists.
You may also be supported by specialists such as pathologists, radiologists, oncology nurses and nurse practitioners, psychiatrists and social workers, and a nutritionist.
We use advanced diagnostic tests to determine your cancer type and stage. Our pathologists specialize in genitourinary tumor testing, providing a precise diagnosis that guides your care.
Diagnostic tests include:
- CT scan
- MRI
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
- Tumor marker blood test
- Ultrasound
Surgery to remove a testicle (orchiectomy) is often part of treatment. Our surgeons are highly experienced in these procedures, including:
- Partial orchiectomy (testis-sparing surgery), to remove the tumor and preserve healthy testicular tissue
- Radical inguinal orchiectomy, to remove the testicle and place a prosthetic testicle, if desired
- Open and robotic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, to remove lymph nodes in the abdomen
Medications and radiation can kill cancer cells after surgery, lowering the risk of recurrence and curing relapses. Some of these treatments include:
- Chemotherapy, high-dose chemotherapy, and stem cell transplantation
- Immunotherapy, which uses your immune system to attack cancer cells
- Image-guided radiation therapy, which precisely targets a tumor, sparing healthy tissue
- Proton therapy, a precise radiation treatment only offered at a few sites in the country .
