Dr. Carla Carten, PhD

Interim Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer

Carla CartenDr. Carla Carten (she/her/hers), PhD, is the interim Senior Vice President Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer within the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I). Previously, Carla joined Mass General Brigham in February 2020 as the Executive Director, of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategy for the Office of DE&I. She has over twenty-five years of experience in the fields of strategic planning, diversity & inclusion, health equity and change management.

In her time at Mass General Brigham, Dr. Carten has been responsible for leading Mass General Brigham’s four-part system-wide strategy that focuses on organization equity. She also launched and leads the DE&I Community of Practice, an 80+ member system-wide working group consisting of employees that manage DE&I responsibilities within their role. The working group includes institution-based DE&I office members and others who formally work on DE&I initiatives.

Dr. Carten will continue to lead the system-wide Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council and identify new areas that this group of leaders can enhance DE&I efforts across our institutions. She will also continue to lead the implementation of our workforce-focused priorities under the United Against Racism Strategy. She is currently working with the Office of DE&I on the development of several anti-racism education initiatives which will launch later this year.

Dr. Carten prioritizes ensuring that there is equity in her team’s feedback on DE&I projects. She values collaboration both from her Office of DE&I team members and those she works with in the system. “We always gain value from listening to another person’s perspective at the table, as our lived experiences always bring a different insight which strengthens contributions to this work” says Dr. Carten.

Prior to joining Mass General Brigham, she served as the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion, and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, UMass Medical School and Chief Diversity Officer, UMass Memorial Health Care System. Dr. Carten also developed and launched the Office of Diversity & Inclusion at the Cleveland Clinic in 2006. She created the strategic plan, structure and training programs for the Office of D&I’s launch.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, a Master of Science degree in Organizational Development and Analysis from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

In her spare time, Dr. Carten enjoys going for walks to her lake in her neighborhood and spending time with her husband and two sons. She also loves scuba diving, participating in book clubs that get down in truly discussing the books, exploring communities through food and drink, and exploring the world through the eyes of her son with autism.
