Specialized support throughout your burn recovery

At Mass General Brigham, our specialized burn rehabilitation team provides personalized care and support throughout your recovery. Our holistic approach focuses on your physical and emotional well-being, helping you maximize your independence, build confidence, and return to your home, work, and community.

Family plays an important role in recovery. During your hospital stay, we work closely with you and your family to provide education, hands-on training, peer counseling, and connections to community support groups. We also teach practical skills and therapeutic techniques your family can use to support your care after discharge. Your team at Spaulding coordinates weekly virtual visits with your surgical team at Mass General Brigham to optimize continuity of care.

Spaulding Rehabilitation is recognized as a leader in rehabilitation care, ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top rehab hospitals in the nation. It is also home to the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System, one of only four federally funded burn injury model systems in the country. Supported by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), this program advances burn rehabilitation through research, education, and innovations that help improve long-term outcomes for burn survivors.

Our approach to rehabilitation

Our specialized teams combine personalized rehabilitation, education, and support with research aimed at improving burn care and helping you achieve your goals throughout recovery.
Care throughout your recovery
Our network provides and coordinates care at multiple levels to meet a full range of burn injury needs, including inpatient rehabilitation. Your physician-led team may include physical, occupational, speech, recreational, and music therapists; case managers; mental health and internal medicine specialists; and nurses with specialized training in burn rehabilitation.
Specialized care for severe burns
Long-term acute care may be appropriate if your burn is severe or combined with other serious medical conditions. If you have complex medical and rehabilitation needs, you may transfer to rehabilitation directly from an intensive care unit. Your care team provides specialized medical, nursing, and rehabilitation services based on your individual needs.
Short-term rehabilitation to help you return home
If you no longer need hospital-level care but require short-term rehabilitation and medical oversight, skilled nursing care can support your continued recovery. Your care may include physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Our goal is to help you return home as quickly as possible, prepared to perform the tasks needed for everyday living.
Support for you and your family
Your family plays an important role in your recovery. During your hospital stay, we provide training to help family members assist with specific therapeutic activities during treatment and after you return home. Individual peer counseling and community burn support groups offer additional opportunities for connection and support throughout your recovery.
