Primary care provides routine and preventative care through regular checkups and immunizations. Primary care physicians, and other clinicians like nurse practitioners and physicians assistants, conduct annual physicals, administer immunizations, treat chronic and acute illnesses and help coordinate specialists for the treatment of chronic illness. Our primary care providers refer patients to specialists within Mass General Brigham system making access easy and coordinated. All our providers use the same electronic health record system enabling the team to effectively manage your care across the health care system.

Our internal medicine and family medicine clinicians offer routine preventative care for adults. You can schedule your annual physical or Medicare annual wellness visit and obtain referrals for your routine health screenings, such as mammography and colonoscopy. Our clinicians offer cardiovascular health, bone health, and reproductive health screenings. Our care teams are skilled at managing chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and are also available for same-day visits for acute problems. We have access to world-class specialists should you need a referral for specialty care.

Our family medicine clinicians offer routine pediatric care, from the newborn stage through adolescence. Our team partners with parents, families, guardians and caregivers to provide the best care for children.

Diagnostic testing and procedures

LOCATIONS AVAILABLE: Salem, NH

At Mass General Brigham Salem we offer colorectal screening to our patients. Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows the physician to examine the entire length of the large intestine. Colonoscopy can assist in identifying problems with the colon, such as early signs of cancer, inflamed tissue, ulcers, and bleeding. Colonoscopy is also used to screen for colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US and the fourth most common cancer in men and women. Patients often don’t feel any symptoms during the early stages of colon cancer, but the colonoscopy can provide your doctor with visual evidence.

During the procedure a thin, flexible, lighted tube, called a colonoscope, is placed into the rectum and colon. In addition to allowing visualization of the internal colon, the colonoscope enables the physician to irrigate, suction, inject air, and access the bowel with surgical instruments. During a colonoscopy, the physician may remove tissue and/or polyps for further examination and possibly treat any problems that are discovered.

Other related procedures that may be used to assess problems of the colon include abdominal x-ray, computed tomography (CT scan) of the abdomen, abdominal ultrasound, barium enema, and sigmoidoscopy.
