Specialized care for a rare and complex cancer

Chordoma is a rare tumor that develops along the spine, from the base of the skull to the tailbone. Because it grows near critical nerves and structures, effective treatment requires highly specialized expertise.

Mass General Brigham is home to the Stephan L. Harris Center for Chordoma Care at Massachusetts General Hospital, a comprehensive treatment and research center. We have specialists in surgery, radiation oncology, and medical oncology collaborate to care for people with chordoma. Our personalized approach combines surgery and radiation therapies to address your unique needs.

Our approach to chordoma treatment

Treating chordoma requires close coordination across multiple specialties. Our team delivers personalized care with a focus on accuracy, safety, and compassionate support at every step.
Coordinated, team-based care

Our team is among the largest chordoma treatment groups in the world with access to the most advanced therapies available under one roof. Our patients get all the care they need from:

  • Medical oncologists
  • Neurologists
  • Neurosurgeons
  • Nutritionists
  • Orthopedic surgeons
  • Pathologists
  • Radiation oncologists
Experts in chordoma diagnosis

Chordoma can be challenging to diagnose because symptoms often resemble more common conditions. Accurate diagnosis is essential to starting treatment as early as possible. Our clinicians are experts in identifying the unique signs of chordoma through:

  • Advanced imaging (MRI and PET/CT scans)
  • Neurological exams
  • Needle biopsy to obtain and test tissue and cell samples
  • World class pathologists who can make the diagnosis
Excellence in surgical care

Our surgeons have extensive experience treating chordoma in complex and hard-to-reach areas of the spine and skull base. Surgical approaches are carefully selected to remove as much tumor as possible while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. Techniques may include:

  • En bloc resection for tumors involving the spine
  • Transoral robotic surgery to noninvasively access and remove tumors located at the skull base
Pioneering radiation therapies

Our radiation oncologists offer therapies designed to treat chordoma while protecting healthy tissue. Depending on your diagnosis, options may include:

  • Proton beam therapy, a highly focused form of radiation often used for skull base and spinal tumors to limit exposure to nearby organs and tissue
  • Photon radiotherapy using most modern techniques, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, and stereotactic body radiotherapy
Financial support to make care accessible
At the Cancer Institute, the Stephan L. Harris Patient and Family Fund helps reduce financial barriers to care by assisting with travel and lodging expenses for people coming to Mass General Brigham for chordoma treatment. This support helps patients and families focus on care, regardless of where they live.

Treatment options for chordoma

Patient story

Proton therapy saves a life

Chris Kordos was a 19-year-old college freshman when he was diagnosed with a rare chordoma that was pushing deep into his brain. Thanks to pioneering proton therapy radiation at Mass General Brigham, today Chris is a married father of two who looks forward to mountain biking.
