Leaders in gynecologic oncology
The Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute offers expert care for all types of female reproductive cancers, including cervical, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, and vulvar cancer. We also provide treatment for less common tumors, such as gestational trophoblastic disease.
We focus on cures and quality of life. Patients receive the most effective treatments available, as well as comprehensive support.
Our approach to gynecologic cancer care
Your team works together throughout your treatment to support every aspect of your health. In addition to gynecologic oncologists and nurses, you may also receive care from:
- Geneticists
- Infertility and reproductive medicine specialists
- Medical oncologists
- Radiation oncologists
- Palliative care specialists
- Pathologists
- Diagnostic and interventional radiologists
- Sexual health specialists
- Psychologists
- Nutritionists
- Clinical social workers
- Spiritual support (e.g., ministers, priests, rabbis)
- Physician assistants
Our surgical gynecologic oncologists use minimally invasive surgery whenever possible to deliver highly effective treatment. These approaches also help our patients have:
- Shorter recovery with less pain
- Lower risks of complications, including impact on fertility
- Shorter hospital stays
Radiation therapy for gynecologic cancers requires precision and skill to minimize impact on a person’s sexual, bowel, and bladder functioning. Our radiation oncologists are nationally recognized for their clinical care and specialized expertise.
We offer the latest radiation therapy treatments, including Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy.
Additionally, we are the only center in New England offering proton therapy. Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy treatment that uses proton beams instead of X-rays to destroy cancer cells. Proton therapy is even more precise and has less impact on surrounding healthy tissue.
We also offer MRI and CT-guided brachytherapy, a sophisticated form of radiation where cancer cells are killed by placing the radiation directly inside the tumor, which can further protect nearby organs.
