Expert uterine cancer care

Uterine cancer most commonly begins in the lining of the uterus called the endometrium or in the wall or muscle of the uterus. Mass General Brigham experts specialize in identifying all types of gynecologic cancers, including endometrial cancer, the most common type of uterine cancer. This expertise means we can more accurately diagnose and stage cancer, allowing us to plan the most effective treatment.

We are recognized leaders in minimally invasive gynecologic cancer surgery and treat thousands of people every year. This level of experience helps our team maintain a high level of specialized skill and precision.

Our approach to uterine cancer care

We use the latest and most effective approaches to diagnose and treat uterine and endometrial cancer. Our specialists offer highly precise care to minimize impact on our patients’ sexual health and functioning.
Multidisciplinary care

Highly specialized experts from across our health system work together to personalize your treatment plan. In addition to oncologists, surgeons, and nurses, your team may include:

  • Nutritionists
  • Oncology psychiatrists and social workers
  • Palliative care providers
  • Pathologists and radiologists
Expertise in diagnosis and treatment planning
Our skilled team uses the most advanced imaging to help diagnose and stage your condition. Additionally, pathologists on our team subspecialize in identifying gynecologic cancers. This expertise leads to more accurate diagnosis and staging, which forms the basis for your treatment. Our team meets regularly to discuss your treatment plan and progress to make sure you’re receiving the best possible care.
Advanced medical therapies

Your care team may recommend traditional or new forms of chemotherapy based on your overall health and stage of cancer. They can also help you manage any treatment side effects.

In addition to chemotherapy, we also offer:

  • Medicines that target specific characteristics of cancer cells (targeted therapies)
  • Therapies for drug-resistant tumors
  • Immunotherapy
  • Access to clinical trials
World-class uterine cancer surgery
We treat thousands of patients each year and are recognized leaders in gynecologic cancer surgery for both rare and common cancers. Our surgeons are skilled in the latest innovations in gynecologic surgery. We use less invasive approaches whenever possible, such as laparoscopic and robotic-assisted hysterectomy, to help you heal faster and with less discomfort.
Leaders in radiation oncology

We offer all types of radiation therapy, including some treatments that are only available at select centers in the U.S. Our radiation oncologists use the most advanced techniques to precisely target cancer cells and minimize damage to healthy cells.

We can deliver radiation treatments internally or externally, depending on your treatment plan. We offer:

  • Concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy
  • High-dose rate, image-guided brachytherapy
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy
  • Intraoperative radiation therapy
  • Proton beam therapy
Proton beam therapy
Proton therapy is an advanced radiation treatment that uses protons instead of X-rays to destroy cancer cells. We are leaders in proton therapy and can use it to treat some types of uterine cancer. Currently, we are the only center in New England offering this treatment.

At every step, your care is guided by a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists. This may include medical, surgical, and radiation oncology physicians, advanced practice providers, radiologists, pathologists, oncology nurses, nurse navigators, and more.
