About the center

Microtia, also known as “little ear,” is a congenital condition in which the external ear is underdeveloped, malformed, or absent at birth. It occurs in approximately 1 in 8,000–10,000 births. In some cases, the external ear appears smaller or differently shaped than usual. Because ear development is often linked to the development of the ear canal and middle ear structures, microtia can be associated with hearing loss. Some children may also develop a skin cyst, known as a cholesteatoma, within the ear canal that requires surgical removal.

Given the complex nature of microtia and its potential impact on both appearance and hearing, care is typically provided through a multidisciplinary team approach. This team may include otologists, facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, audiologists, radiologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, prosthodontists, and child life specialists, who work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each child’s needs.
