Personalized care for young people with personality disorders

Mass General Brigham—which includes McLean Hospital, a U.S. News & World Report top-ranked psychiatric care facility—offers specialized programs for adolescents and young adults with personality disorders. For example, our dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) programs, known collectively as 3East, provide structured, evidence-based care for a range of emotional and behavioral challenges.

Our approach values the balance of acceptance and change. We’re committed to personalized evaluations, multispecialty treatment plans, trauma-informed care, and skills-building that support long-term growth.

Our approach to personality disorder care for children and adolescents

Our continuum of care offers young people the treatment they need in settings that allow them to focus on recovery. We help teens and young adults find the safety and support they need to manage their symptoms.
Intensive residential programs

When needed, we provide concentrated, 24-hour care for teens who require residential treatment through our 3East Residential Program. This self-pay program offers an immersive curriculum that includes six hours of daily group, individual, and family therapy, along with skills coaching and support groups. Teens also receive psychiatric assessment and medication management as part of their care. The typical length of stay is a minimum of 42 days.

Our outpatient program is the only level of care that accepts insurance and also offers a self-pay option.

Residential assessment program
During this two-week stay, we assess young adults ages 14 to 21. Our around-the-clock evaluations help ensure teens and young adults get accurate diagnoses and informed treatment recommendations.
Partial hospitalization
This outpatient day program offers an additional level of care for high school students struggling with self-harm, suicidal ideation, and other high-risk or impulsive behaviors. Teens receive group and individual DBT, along with medication consultations to support their overall function. Program participants receive treatment on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for four to six weeks.
Outpatient care
Our outpatient programs include individual and family therapy, skills groups, and coaching. Treatment is tailored to each patient and focuses on improving emotional regulation, reducing high-risk behaviors, and strengthening relationships.
It’s common for teens with BPD to experience other mental health conditions and symptoms. We provide easy access to consultations for eating disorders, trauma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other challenges.
