Our approach to care for obesity in adolescence

Many factors can cause excess weight. We listen carefully to your child’s concerns, customizing a care plan that increases their chances of achieving a healthy weight now and in the future.
Medical nutrition for weight loss in teens

We provide nonsurgical treatments to help pre-teens and teens reach a healthier body weight. This seven-month program includes:

  • Individual evaluation visits with a doctor, dietitian, and psychologist who specialize in weight management
  • Monthly visits for six months focusing on mindful eating, fad diets, exercise, and other topics
  • A follow-up visit in the seventh month to review progress and discuss next steps, including weight loss medications or surgery when appropriate
Weight loss surgery for teens

We offer weight surgery for teens with severe obesity. Your child’s care team includes a doctor, dietitian, and psychologist who help you understand the potential benefits, risks, and long-term expectations of weight loss (bariatric) surgery.

Weight loss surgeries we offer for teens include:

  • Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) to make the stomach smaller and bypass the small intestine, reducing calorie intake and absorption
  • Gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy) to remove a large part of the stomach, which lessens hunger signals and calorie intake
