Commitment to quality and safety

Our Mass General Brigham goal is to lead the nation in providing the highest quality care For Every Patient. In alignment with this system goal, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital nurses are contributing to delivering the highest quality care by engaging in strategies that improve the patient’s experience, and nursing quality outcomes, while also reducing mortality and hospital acquired infections. Using a High Reliability framework, nursing strategies are transforming care that is equitable, team-oriented, data driven, and rigorously focused on mitigating risk and continually improving care delivery.

Research and innovation

Nurses at WDH participate in quality improvement in their departments and through hospital-wide projects. For nurses interested in research, we have a Nursing Research Consultant, who guides ideas from first idea, through IRB review and on to completion. Examples of recent nursing and collaborative research studies:

  • Weighted Blanket Study to evaluate the effects of a weighted blanket on the anxiety level of patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy in our Cancer Center

Nursing education and professional development

Ongoing professional development and learning opportunities are essential to a successful nursing career. Through innovative, evidence-informed and theory-guided teaching, we provide our nurses with the opportunities to advance their practice and engage in lifelong learning. Our Center for Nursing Excellence supports the advancement of clinical nursing practice and interprofessional collaboration, focusing on three key areas: quality, education and scholarship.
New Graduate Nurse Program
The integration of classroom, simulation training and preceptorship in the residency program allows newly licensed registered nurses to seamlessly transition to professional practice. WDH schedules three nurse cohorts annually, beginning in February, July and October, to meet the needs of the organization and the nurse residents.
Professional Recognition Program
Our Professional Recognition Program is a career ladder designed for clinical nurses that allows them to grow and advance in their profession without having to leave the bedside. You can continue doing what you love – establishing relationships with and caring for patients.
Education Center
Nurses and other clinicians can practice and learn in our Simulation Lab, which provides experience for Labor and Delivery, NICU, Trauma, Surgery and other specialties. Our Nursing, Education, Research, and Innovation (NERI) department educators support nurses and other clinicians during individualized orientation and throughout their careers.
Tuition reimbursement
As members of Mass General Brigham, WDH nurses have access to generous tuition reimbursement to pursue a new degree, take part in continuing education, or prepare for professional certification. In addition, WDH has the Helen Garland and Edna Dube nursing scholarships, awarded annually to select nurses who are advancing their education.
Certification support
Through our Specialty Certification Reimbursement policy, nurses pursuing professional certification are reimbursed for the cost of certification or recertification exams. Nurses also have free access to several online certification preparation courses through Lippincott Learning.
