Combining expertise with compassion

At the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, we have a long history of treating patients with complex blood cancers. Since 1992, our teams have performed hundreds of transplants each year, replacing unhealthy blood-forming cells with healthy ones. We’re experts in both autologous transplant, which uses a patient’s own cells, and allogeneic transplant, which uses cells from a donor. Our approach combines clinical expertise with coordinated support services, delivered in a welcoming and patient-centered environment.

Our approach to care

Our program emphasizes comprehensive, compassionate transplant care. We tailor treatment to each patient’s diagnosis, overall health, and goals, while providing ongoing education and support.
Access to innovative treatments

You receive treatment from physician-scientists who are actively advancing bone marrow transplant medicine. Areas of focus include:

  • Combining kidney and bone marrow transplants to improve outcomes
  • Decreasing rates of disease relapse after transplant through novel post-transplant interventions
  • Safer transplant options for patients without fully matched donors
  • Finding new treatments for prevention and treatment of graft-versus-host disease
  • Reducing transplant-related toxicity
  • Improving quality of life for patients undergoing transplant
Coordinated, team-based care

Bone marrow transplant care involves many specialists working closely together. Your care team may include:

  • Hematologists
  • Medical oncologists
  • Pathologists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Advanced practice providers
  • Transplant clinical nurses and nurse navigators
  • Social workers
  • Physical and occupational therapists
  • Donor search coordinators
  • Nutritionists
  • Researchers
Tailored bone marrow transplant survivorship care

Survivorship care is an integral part of our transplant approach. We support patients through the long-term effects of transplant with ongoing evaluation and care that may include:

  • Anxiety or depression
  • Bone health
  • Chronic graft-versus-host disease
  • Hormonal deficiencies
  • Late effects of cancer treatment, such as cardiopulmonary dysfunction
  • Physical symptoms such as pain, fatigue, or sleep disturbances
  • Sexual problems or fertility concerns

Conditions we treat with bone marrow transplant

A bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant) replaces diseased or damaged cells in the soft, spongy tissue inside your bones (marrow). We offer hematopoietic cell transplants to treat a wide variety of disorders, blood cancers, and bone marrow cancers, including:

Patient story

Specialized expertise and innovative care for rare T-cell lymphoma

After being diagnosed with peripheral T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer, Jennifer Brennan sought the expertise of Salvia Jain, MD, a hematologist and medical oncologist at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. Dr. Jain is one of the country’s top T-cell lymphoma experts. Brennan benefited from an innovative cancer treatment strategy that included a combination of two drugs studied in a clinical trial followed by an allogeneic stem cell transplant. The novel approach worked, sending the cancer into remission.

Cancer clinical trials and research

Our research is shaping the future of cancer care. We offer access to clinical trials and emerging therapies, including treatments that may not yet be widely available. Eligibility depends on a person’s diagnosis, treatment history, and more. Explore our research and clinical trials or talk with your care team to learn about available options.
