Comprehensive breast cancer care
Approximately 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer. Although rarer, men can also get breast cancer. Today, breast cancer is more treatable than ever, thanks to advances in research and innovation developed here and around the world.
Our program has a long history of excellence in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. At the Cancer Institute, care is guided by a multidisciplinary team that works together to evaluate each case and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Our teams have contributed to advances in care, including proton therapy and nipple-sparing surgical techniques, and continue to improve treatment options through research and clinical expertise.
Our approach to breast cancer care
Our surgeons perform a high volume of procedures every year. We offer the most advanced surgical techniques, like nipple-sparing mastectomy, which effectively treats breast cancer while preserving as much of your natural appearance as possible.
In addition to lumpectomy and mastectomy, we also offer reconstruction surgery from renowned specialists. Your surgery is completely customized to provide the most effective treatment and the best aesthetic results.
Some patients benefit from more focused, condition-specific care. We offer specialized services for people with:
- Triple-negative breast cancer
- Breast cancer–related lymphedema
- Breast cancer involving the chest wall
For younger patients, care also includes support for age-specific needs, such as fertility, long-term health, and survivorship.
Through our ongoing clinical trials, we develop new cancer treatments, as well as new ways to make current treatments more effective. Some of our research is focused on:
- Improving early detection for breast cancer
- Understanding the molecular features of different types of breast cancer
- Identifying how cancers respond to hormone therapy
- Offering new therapies for breast cancer subtypes, including triple-negative breast cancer
- Determining who has a high risk of cancer recurrence and may need more aggressive treatment
- Protecting the heart while receiving radiation for cancer
Developing surgical tools to assess whether cancer has been fully removed during surgery, helping reduce the need for a second operation
