Imaging
Expert imaging and radiology care
Our team of nearly 400 radiologists, working alongside imaging technologists, specially trained nurses, residents, fellows, and support staff, provides advanced imaging that helps diagnose health conditions and guide treatment.
We offer the full range of medical imaging technology, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, nuclear medicine, PET-CT, PET-MRI, bone densitometry, lung screening, and the latest breast imaging techniques.
We are highly specialized, with expertise in abdominal, cardiovascular, emergency, musculoskeletal, neurological, pediatric, and thoracic imaging. Explore the information below to learn more about the specialized imaging services and expertise available across Mass General Brigham.
Imaging exams

- MRI: Advanced MRI options including wide-bore 3T scanners — an open MRI for patients who need more space — and specialized imaging for the heart, breast, prostate, and other areas
- CT: Provides detailed, cross-sectional images for a broad range of exams, including cardiac CT, CT angiography, photon-counting CT, and low-dose CT for lung screening
- Breast imaging: Specialized breast imaging using mammography, 3D mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and image-guided biopsy
- Lung screening: Low-dose CT screening that can detect lung cancer at an earlier stage, when it may be more treatable
- PET-CT: Combined PET and CT imaging that shows cellular activity alongside detailed images to help detect disease and monitor treatment
- PET-MRI: Combined PET and MRI technology that shows cellular activity alongside detailed soft-tissue imaging, with less radiation than PET-CT
- Ultrasound: Noninvasive, radiation-free imaging of organs, tissues, blood vessels, and pregnancy
- Bone densitometry: A quick, low-dose X-ray exam that measures bone density and helps diagnose and monitor osteoporosis and other causes of bone loss
- X-ray: Scheduled and walk-in imaging available at many locations for convenient evaluation of bones, the chest, and other areas
Our approach to imaging
Abdominal imaging
Imaging of the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and other abdominal organs
Breast imaging
Mammography and other imaging used to detect and evaluate breast conditions
Cardiovascular imaging
Advanced imaging of the heart and blood vessels
Emergency imaging
Rapid imaging that helps diagnose injuries and urgent medical conditions
Musculoskeletal imaging
Imaging of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons
Neurointerventional imaging
Image-guided procedures used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the brain and spine
Neuroradiology
Imaging of the brain, spine, head, and nervous system
Nuclear medicine and molecular imaging
Specialized imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to evaluate organ function, detect disease, and guide treatment
Pediatric imaging
Imaging designed specifically for infants, children, and adolescents. Learn more about Pediatric Imaging.
Thoracic imaging
Imaging of the lungs, airways, chest, and related structures
Interventional Radiology
Image-guided minimally invasive procedures used to diagnose and treat many conditions, often without traditional surgery. Learn more about Interventional Radiology.
