Breast Reconstruction Surgery Program

You may choose breast reconstruction as part of treatment for breast cancer or another breast condition. Whatever your situation or goals, we work closely with you to provide personalized care and results that feel right for you.

Restoring comfort and confidence after breast surgery

At Mass General Brigham, our surgeons specialize in recreating natural-looking breasts using the newest and most advanced techniques. We perform hundreds of breast reconstruction procedures each year, including DIEP flap reconstruction and single-stage breast implants, and have been pioneers in complex tissue-based and implant-based reconstruction.

This depth of experience allows us to provide strong clinical outcomes while also focusing on appearance and quality of life. Our surgeons also offer breast reduction and cosmetic breast procedures, including breast enhancement and augmentation.

Our approach to breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is completely tailored to you, including your health needs, anatomy, and personal preferences. We consider all these details in determining the best approach to achieve the results you want.
A personalized reconstruction plan
We start with a consultation to discuss your best options. We coordinate closely with your Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute team. Depending on your situation, reconstruction may be performed during a mastectomy (immediate reconstruction), including nipple-sparing mastectomy when appropriate, or after cancer treatment is complete (delayed reconstruction).
Presurgical imaging and planning
Before your reconstruction, our imaging specialists may obtain special studies to assess parts of your anatomy that may be important to your reconstructive plan. This information helps guide your surgeon, improves surgical precision, and supports safer procedures and recovery. We will help you understand the whole process, including what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.
Expertise in tissue-based options

Your reconstruction options depend on your treatment plan and personal preferences. We offer autologous reconstruction, where we use tissue from another part of your body to rebuild your breast. These approaches include:

  • TRAM flap, uses muscle, fat, and skin from your abdomen
  • DIEP flap, uses fat and skin from your abdomen
  • TMG flap, uses tissue from your thigh
  • Latissimus dorsi flap, uses fat and skin from your back (a less common technique)
Expertise in implant-based options
Our surgeons offer a variety of approaches to implant-based reconstruction. In some cases, it may be possible to perform implant-based reconstruction in a single stage (direct to implant) at the time of mastectomy. In other situations, it may be more ideal to perform implant-based reconstruction in two stages, including initial placement of a temporary tissue expander that is gradually filled over a period of weeks following mastectomy and then swapped for a permanent implant in a short second procedure.
Innovations in breast reconstruction
To achieve the most natural-looking and natural-feeling results, our surgeons may combine different reconstructive techniques, including both tissue-based and implant-based techniques. They may also incorporate techniques to restore sensation by reconnecting nerves to reconstructed breasts or address arm swelling by restoring lymphatic channels.
Commitment to research and discovery
Our breast reconstruction surgeons are actively involved in research to help develop the newest treatment advances. Much of our research focuses on improving surgical safety and results. We also study how breast reconstruction can affect a person’s well-being and body image.
