Helping college students thrive

The College Mental Health Program may be right for students who are struggling with their mental health or having trouble adjusting to campus life. We work with students currently receiving care at Mass General Brigham and McLean Hospital, as well as those with no prior connection to the hospital system. Our goal is to help students understand their strengths and opportunities for growth while building the skills to help them manage the demands of college life. We also provide a range of services for college and university administrators, student affairs professionals, and mental health providers.

Our approach to mental health care

Whether you have an existing mental health diagnosis or are struggling with the college transition, we’re here to help. We work closely with students and families to provide personalized care that meets your unique needs.
Student and family mental health services

Our program includes consultations, weekly meetings, campus visits, and individual or group coaching. We offer:

  • Bridge to Campus college readiness consults: These are ideal for students with mental health conditions who are preparing to start college, considering a leave of absence, or contemplating a transfer. We work with students and administrators to assess a student’s readiness and ensure they have proper support.
  • College skills coaching: We offer one-on-one coaching sessions to address social skills, executive functioning, navigating campus resources, improving self-care, and more.
  • Psychoeducation support groups: Weekly virtual group sessions provide extra coaching and support for students with mental health conditions.
University professional mental health services

We also provide a range of services for college and university administrators, student affairs professionals, and mental health providers, including:

  • Campus consults: We offer guidance on effective mental health resources, programming, policies, and practices.
  • Campus visits: We invite school leaders to visit our hospital, and we often visit college campuses. These strong partnerships are crucial to support the growing mental health needs of students.
  • McLean Hospital college database: Our electronic database gives us vital information to help us work with students and their schools most effectively. Each participating school supplies us with its contact info, protocols, policies, and resources. This allows us to design aftercare plans that incorporate each student’s specific campus resources.

Mental health conditions in college students

We provide supplemental student-focused care to students managing a wide array of concerns. We work with students and their families to provide personalized, effective, evidence-based, psychoeducational individual and group services.
