Massachusetts General Hospital
At Mass General, we provide advanced, dedicated care for high-risk multiple pregnancies. Our subspecialists are highly experienced in meeting the unique needs anticipated throughout the prenatal and postpartum periods of a pregnancy with multiples.
We provide holistic wraparound care through pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. Nutrition and social work are available to help support patients through their pregnancy.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital
At the Comprehensive Care Center for Multiples at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, our subspecialists provide advanced, multidisciplinary care, with additional holistic emotional and social support services available during pregnancy.
Our team consists of a dedicated maternal-fetal medicine provider, nurse, social worker, and coordinator that follows patients through all stages of pregnancy, into delivery, and potential NICU stays. Patients within this program are given access to services tailored to pregnancy with multiples including patient education, peer support groups, and nutrition.
Our approach to multiples pregnancy
Genetic counseling is highly recommended for patients pregnant with multiples. Our genetic counselors will work with you to find the most appropriate screening or diagnostic tests for your pregnancy, being mindful that genetic screening options and interpretations of results can differ for multiples pregnancies.
Tests may include:
- Non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS)
- Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
- Amniocentesis
Pregnancy with multiples may increase the risk for certain maternal and fetal complications. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists may recommend patients have more frequent prenatal visits and ultrasounds to closely monitor the mom and babies.
We also treat conditions specific to monochorionic twins, such as twin anemia polycythemia sequence (TAPS) and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
Mass General Brigham has two Level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) which offer specialized intensive care to multiples if they arrive early (preterm birth). Our NICUs prioritize family-centered care, enabling you to be with your babies 24/7 in private or adjoining rooms.
Our team cares for around 3,000 infants each year. We use the latest technology to support:
- Breathing and feeding for infants born as early as 23 weeks
- Development and healing of the infant brain
- Growth of babies with developmental, feeding, and neurological challenges
Meeting nutritional goals during a multiples pregnancy helps keep you and your babies healthy. Our registered dietitians make sure you and your babies get the nutrients you need during each pregnancy stage.
After birth, our nutritionists can help you to plan a diet to support lactation if you choose to breastfeed (chestfeed).
