Anatomic Pathology
High-volume pathology expertise
Anatomic pathologists specialize in diagnosing diseases by studying tissue, cell, or fluid samples.
At Mass General Brigham, our anatomic pathologists collectively analyze more than 450,000 samples each year, making us one of the highest-volume diagnostic pathology practices in the country.
Our approach to anatomic pathology
Cytopathology is a type of anatomic pathology that studies individual cells or cell clusters, rather than large sections of tissue. Our cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, medical technologists, clinical lab assistants, and cytopathology fellows work together to:
- Use the best technology to analyze cells
- Design and test new methods in cytopathology
- Teach and train the next generation of cytopathologists
Surgical pathologists are experts in analyzing tissue samples obtained during surgeries, procedures, or clinical visits.
We subspecialize in distinct areas to provide the most accurate diagnoses. Our list of focused subspecialty services include:
- Bone and soft tissue pathology
- Breast pathology
- Cardiovascular pathology
- Dermatopathology
- Endocrine pathology
- Head and neck (ENT) pathology
- Gastrointestinal pathology
- Genitourinary pathology
- Gynecologic pathology
- Hematopathology
- Neuropathology
- Obstetric and perinatal pathology
- Ophthalmic pathology
- Pediatric pathology
- Pulmonary pathology
- Renal pathology
Our cytopathologists also run a fine needle aspiration (FNA)/biopsy service.
FNA biopsies use thin needles to collect cell samples for testing. You may have an FNA biopsy to evaluate a tumor, infection, or other disease. Our pathologists have expert training both in performing FNA biopsies and interpreting the results quickly.
