At Mass General Brigham, we offer extensive transfusion medicine services, teach and train new transfusion medicine specialists, and conduct research in transfusion medicine. Our services have achieved accreditation with multiple organizations, including the FDA and The Joint Commission.

Expert transfusion services

Transfusion medicine focuses on blood sample testing, distribution of blood products, cellular therapy collection, processing, blood donation, and storage. Specialized transfusion services

Our program includes many transfusion services, including the blood bank, blood donor center, and the apheresis service.
Blood bank

Our blood banks issue more than 100,000 blood products each year, supporting a range of services such as maternal-fetal medicine, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and surgery.

Our blood bank includes a:

  • Blood component manufacturing lab
  • Compatibility testing lab
  • Component storage and issuing lab
  • Reference immunohematology lab
  • Tissue bank
Blood donor center

Blood donations are essential for people having surgery, cancer treatment, or traumatic injury care.

When you donate blood or platelets at our center or the blood mobile, you make a lifesaving difference for our community.

Apheresis service

Apheresis is a treatment that takes whole blood from a donor or patient and separates it into its various components. After we collect what we need, we return the rest of your blood to you through a transfusion.

Many people with blood conditions, neurologic diseases, or having an organ transplant need this innovative treatment.
