About the Pavilion
Mass General Brigham is a leader in mental health and psychiatric care, with McLean Hospital serving as a world leader in care, research, and education. The Pavilion’s two-week residential treatment program provides unparalleled diagnostic evaluation with an emphasis on personalized, evidence-based care, discretion, flexibility, and confidentiality. We specialize in helping individuals who have struggled to receive an accurate diagnosis of their condition or find effective treatment to alleviate symptoms. Since 1999, when we opened as a first-of-its-kind program, people have been coming to The Pavilion from across the country and around the world to benefit from our expert assessment and care. We help hundreds of people each year gain a thorough understanding of their mental health disorder and implement effective strategies for treatment.
Our approach to care
The Pavilion is ideal for individuals who:
- Have a history of persistent treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions
- Have not been able to receive an accurate diagnosis of their illness
- Are struggling with a broad range of disorders, including difficulties with mood instability (depression, anxiety, or both), psychotic symptoms, cognitive impairment, self-destructive or self-injurious behavior, substance use, and dual diagnoses
- Are seeking an individualized, in-depth, and multidisciplinary approach to finding an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan
We treat adults over the age of 18, however, we may make exceptions for some individuals who are younger. As our program is self-pay, we do not accept insurance or assist with insurance reimbursement efforts.
We look forward to speaking with you. To make a referral or to obtain more information about our unique program, please call 617-855-3000.
Upon admission, patients undergo a series of meetings and testing, including psychiatric, neuropsychiatric, and neurological evaluation, basic medical and imaging assessments, an overnight sleep study, and psychological and neuropsychological testing.
These assessments provide diagnostic clarity and guide treatment of complex symptoms.
We work with individuals, their families, and referring clinicians to determine if our program is an appropriate option. We do a preliminary screening over the phone and gather as much pertinent information as possible.
We can help arrange admission from most domestic or international locations and can coordinate airport limousine transportation and assistance with off-campus accommodations, if needed.
Specialty consultations are available in areas such as:
- substance misuse
- impulse control disorders
- trauma and post-traumatic stress
- geriatrics
- neurotherapeutics (ECT, TMS, ketamine)
- forensic evaluation
The team considers both biological and emotional factors, as well as each patient’s medical and neurological history, to ensure a thorough and individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment planning.
Once evaluations are complete, the patient’s care team develops a clinical summary outlining diagnostic results as well as specific therapeutic recommendations and a tailored treatment plan.
Treatment begins upon admission and may include medication management, behavior therapy, individual therapy, family meetings, 24-hour nursing care, and group therapy. When appropriate, neurotherapeutics are initiated promptly to manage treatment-resistant depression.
Group therapy helps patients build important coping skills using evidence-based treatment models, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mentalization-based treatment (MBT).
Located on McLean's historic main campus, The Pavilion offers patients a peaceful treatment setting. Our comfortable environment, attractive decor, and range of high-quality amenities are designed to help individuals focus on treatment as well as their overall health and well-being.
- Our 16-bed program provides private and comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms. Other amenities—such as a flat-screen TV and wireless internet access—help individuals feel at home.
- We offer access to a nearby state-of-the-art sports club, an on-campus fitness center, and a Pavilion-based fitness trainer who helps patients work on overall wellness and health goals.
- Our staff chefs prepare individual meals for each patient. While the hospital is situated on its own private grounds, we are only a few miles away from Boston-area attractions and resources.
- We incorporate holistic practices to help each individual achieve a sense of better health and balance. While each day is filled with appointments and group therapy, patients have ample time to relax, work out, and reflect in the privacy of their room or other quiet spaces.

The Middle East Center for Culturally Informed Care at The Pavilion provides comprehensive assessment and treatment planning for a broad range of psychiatric disorders, with careful attention to cultural and family considerations.
This customized service guides international clientele through the hospital’s world-class programs—from an initial confidential evaluation at The Pavilion through any needed specialized treatment.
Our assessments and interventions reflect issues commonly experienced by Middle Eastern patients, with family involvement central to our approach. Recognizing that family name and reputation are sources of honor and pride, we help families navigate the shame and strain that can accompany mental illness, problematic behaviors, or not meeting societal expectations. We also address the impact of discrimination and prejudices on quality of life.
While many clients are proficient in English, we understand that some nuances are best conveyed in Arabic. Our staff members speak multiple Arabic dialects, including Levantine and Gulf, typically eliminating the need for a translator.
We have a proven track record of working with patients and families from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Libya. Privacy is paramount, and we use the utmost discretion to protect family name and reputation.
Although this service focuses on Middle Eastern clientele, we also work with individuals from around the world and receive referrals from six continents. We tailor care to meet the needs of each international patient and family.
