Understanding alcohol and drug use disorders

Alcohol and drug disorders often involve powerful cravings for substances or compulsive behaviors, and affect nearly every part of life, including health, relationships, work, and school.

As a national leader in addiction treatment and research, Mass General Brigham provides comprehensive care for both common and complex substance use disorders.

Our services include medications to ease withdrawal and reduce cravings, evidence-based psychosocial therapies, family support, and dedicated programs for those who need more intensive support.

Services we offer

We provide a range of programs with different levels of care, from walk-in clinics to inpatient detoxification and residential treatment. This range allows us to meet a wide variety of patient needs.

Comprehensive treatment programs

We offer specialized programs designed to meet the needs of different patient populations.

Programs include:

Outpatient care

Outpatient care is provided in a clinic setting, with the option for virtual visits when appropriate. Treatment may include medications, which can be given in the clinic (such as Brixadi, Sublocade, and Vivitrol) or prescribed for pickup at your local pharmacy.

Services include:

  • Walk-in and immediate access through our Substance Use Disorder Bridge Clinics
  • Make an appointment programs at the West End Clinic, McLean Hospital, Faulkner Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and Salem Hospital
  • Outpatient services for adolescents and young adults (ages 14–26) at the Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS)

Hospital-based and inpatient care

Inpatient care is provided in a hospital setting with 24/7 medical support and is best for patients who need close monitoring for safety and health.

Services include:

  • Assessment and consultation through our Addiction Consult Teams (ACT) for patients receiving inpatient care across the system
  • Inpatient withdrawal management (detoxification) at McLean Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital

Residential treatment

Residential treatment means you live in a structured, supportive setting where care is provided alongside housing and meals. These programs are staffed 24/7 and can respond to urgent needs.

Mass General Brigham offers two residential treatment programs:

Our approach to addiction care

Our clinicians are with you throughout your care, offering services from walk-in and outpatient visits to virtual care and more intensive treatment, including detoxification and residential programs.
Experts in diagnosing and treating alcohol and drug disorders

Alcohol and drug use can affect people in different ways, from using more than intended to serious health risks.

Our clinicians provide a thorough, personalized evaluation that looks at your substance use, overall health, and how your life may be affected. We take time to understand your goals and work with you to create a treatment plan that aligns with your values and priorities.

We use the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria to help match you with the level of care that fits your needs, including outpatient, residential, or inpatient options.

Integrated care for co-existing conditions
We screen for co-occurring conditions such as depression and anxiety as part of a comprehensive evaluation. Because Mass General Brigham offers care for a wide range of mental health conditions across our system, we can coordinate treatment to address both substance use and mental health needs in one place.
