Complete, leading-edge eye treatment for children

Pediatric eye conditions can affect vision development, learning, and daily life. Some conditions are present at birth, while others develop during childhood and require close monitoring over time.

The pediatric ophthalmologists and pediatric optometrists from Children’s Hospital Ophthalmology Foundation serve the eye care needs of children seen at Mass Eye and Ear and is one of the most comprehensive pediatric ophthalmology networks in the country. Our doctors evaluate, diagnose, and treat the full range of eye conditions that affect children, and eye misalignment problems in both children and adults. We also provide eye care for children with developmental delays, including autism.

Children should get their eyes checked at regular pediatrician visits. If the doctor notices a problem, they may recommend a pediatric ophthalmologist or optometrist. Once your child starts seeing an eye doctor, it is important to be consistent with the recommended follow-up appointments, to allow the doctor to monitor conditions closely and accurately.

If any symptoms seem urgent, it is best to take your child to the Mass Eye and Ear Emergency Department immediately.

Our approach to pediatric eye care

Pediatric eye care involves everything from vision screenings to caring for the most complex eye problems. Our team provides care that is thorough, thoughtful, and tailored to your child’s age and developmental stage.
When to see a pediatric eye doctor

In Massachusetts, children must get at least one vision screening in the year before starting kindergarten. Your child may also need an eye exam if:

  • There’s a family history of strabismus or other eye conditions.
  • They have failed a vision screening.
  • You suspect a vision problem.
  • Your child has a health condition associated with eye problems, such as neurofibromatosis, Down syndrome, or Marfan syndrome.
Specialized strabismus care
Our team also includes experts in strabismus, or misaligned eyes. These specialists treat both children and adults with strabismus.
