Sickle Cell Disease Program

Sickle cell disease is a chronic blood disorder that affects all aspects of life. Our blood disorder specialists (hematologists) and care team provide comprehensive services to ease symptoms and help you enjoy life to the fullest.

Compassionate care for sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a lifelong, inherited blood disorder that causes episodes of severe pain known as pain crises and other symptoms. In some cases, SCD can become life-threatening. Our blood disorder specialists (hematologists) have specialized SCD expertise. They work closely with care team members and primary care providers to offer comprehensive services that help you enjoy the best quality of life. We offer a true medical home where patients and families feel seen and heard.

Our team understands the complexities of sickle cell disease, including how the condition affects your overall health. We provide personalized care for you and your family.
Comprehensive services for sickle cell disease

We offer the latest medical treatments and clinical trials, ensuring each patient has access to therapies that help.

Our comprehensive offerings include:

  • CRISPR gene therapy
  • Disease-modifying medications
  • Outpatient care for chronic complications
  • Hospital-based care for sudden-onset (acute) issues
  • Urgent, same-day infusions
  • Palliative care to ease pain and other symptoms
  • Stem cell (bone marrow) transplants at our renowned Bone Marrow Transplant Program
  • Integrative therapies, such as acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, and meditation
CRISPR gene therapy for sickle cell disease

We were among the first in the world to offer CRISPR gene therapy for sickle cell disease. CRISPR stands for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats.” This gene therapy fixes errors (mutations) in genes that cause sickle (C)-shaped red blood cells to form. After treatment, your body starts to produce normal, circular-shaped red blood cells that function as they should.

Gene therapy isn’t a cure for SCD. But it can significantly reduce the incidence of pain crises, helping to prevent hospitalizations and improve quality of life.

Dedicated social work services for those with sickle cell disease

Our hematology social workers understand how sickle cell disease affects patients and families. We offer counseling, guidance, and support for patients and loved ones.

Our social work team can address:

  • Concerns about depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other behavioral health issues
  • Conflicts between patients and family members about SCD
  • Disease impact on relationships, school, work, and finances
  • Safety concerns in personal relationships
  • Supportive resources in your local community

Advanced care for sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease can cause chronic, severe pain, as well as symptoms like fatigue and swollen, achy joints. It also increases your risk of organ damage, blood clots, strokes, and other life-threatening issues. We manage all disease-related conditions, helping to protect your health.

Patient story

Finding relief after years of unbearable pain from sickle cell disease

In 2023, Allan Byamukama, a patient at the Sickle Cell Disease Program at Mass General Brigham, was one of the first patients in the world to receive a newly approved innovative gene therapy for sickle cell disease. The treatment significantly reduces pain and pain crises that often require hospital-based care.
