Allergy and Clinical Immunology
Expert care for allergic disease and immunodeficiencies
Allergic conditions occur when the immune system reacts to substances that are usually harmless, such as foods, pollen, or medications. Immunodeficiency occurs when the immune system does not function properly. This can make it harder for the body to fight infections and may lead to more frequent or severe illness.
At Mass General Brigham, our board-certified allergy and clinical immunology specialists offer dedicated programs, advanced diagnostic testing, and coordinated expert care across specialties to provide adults and children with the most effective treatments available for allergic diseases and immune deficiencies.
Our approach to allergy and immunodeficiency care
All patients receive an initial comprehensive consultation with a physician with expertise in your clinical problem. This includes specialized diagnostic testing, such as skin or blood tests, to assess the likelihood and cause of the allergy. You then receive a treatment plan that is tailored to you.
Our physicians and nurses are highly experienced in managing all types of allergic and immunologic disorders. They also collaborate closely with specialists across Mass General Brigham to deliver seamless, multidisciplinary care for adults and children.
We provide a full range of diagnostic services to diagnose, monitor, and manage allergies and immunodeficiencies, including:
- Allergy skin testing
- Patch testing
- Oral challenges to food and medications
- Lung function testing
- Desensitization
You benefit from access to state-of-the-art treatments, clinical trials, and studies not widely available elsewhere.
Mass General Brigham has a rich history in allergy and immunology research, dating back to 1919. Our participation in landmark “allergy shot” studies revolutionized how doctors treat allergies today. We also contributed to the discovery of leukotrienes, chemicals in the body that can cause airway inflammation and wheezing, leading to new treatment options for asthma.
Today, our teams lead clinical trials to understand the causes of allergic and immune conditions and improve how they are diagnosed and treated.
