Family-centered support as part of Healey & AMG Center for ALS care

An ALS diagnosis can be challenging for both patients and their loved ones. For parents and grandparents with ALS, supporting children through these changes can add additional complexity.

The Daniella Lipper ALS PACT Program builds on the comprehensive care of the Healey & AMG Center for ALS by providing guidance to adults with ALS who are caring for children aged 0-25 years. Child psychologists work closely with patients and their co-parents to address concerns they have about how ALS will affect their children and provide information to help parents and grandparents support children’s resilience and coping.

Our approach to supporting parents of children with ALS

The ALS PACT Program supports patients and their co-parents from early diagnosis through ongoing care at the Healey & AMG Center for ALS.
Accessible support at every stage

We recognize that parents are the experts on their own children and families. Working together, we can help you:

  • Plan how to talk about your condition with children over time
  • Anticipate how children may respond to changes and make plans that will support their adjustment
  • Recognize when additional support may be helpful to a child

There is no cost to patients for this service, thanks to generous philanthropic support. Most appointments are by phone or video and may include the patient and other adults involved in caring for children and grandchildren in the family. Children do not attend the appointments.

Collaborative, multidisciplinary care
The ALS PACT Program works in close coordination with the rest of the Healey & AMG Center for ALS team to ensure that the PACT clinician understands each patient’s overall care plan and medical challenges, and that the medical specialists recognize how a patient’s role as a parent or grandparent is being affected by ALS.
Preparation for the journey ahead
Living with ALS in a family can involve difficult conversations about changes over time. As part of care at the Healey & AMG Center for ALS, the Daniella Lipper ALS PACT Program helps patients prepare for these conversations, offering guidance, education, and compassionate support.
