Pregnancy comes with a host of changes to your body, especially your heart, which works harder to support you and your growing baby.

Whether you have a pre-existing heart condition or develop one during or after pregnancy, we're here for you. Our approach to cardiovascular disease and pregnancy care

We help you feel informed, prepared, and supported at every stage. Your care team develops a detailed pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum plan tailored to both your heart condition and your baby’s needs. Our team is available for this integrated care across the continuum of pregnancy and will help support your individual care plan.
Treating heart disease in pregnancy

Heart problems during pregnancy require a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide comprehensive and personalized care for you and your baby. Our team works closely together with you to provide coordinated care among the following specialists:

  • Maternal-fetal medicine doctors
  • Cardiologists
  • Obstetric anesthesiologists
  • Critical care and obstetric nursing
  • Other providers to support you through pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery

Together, your care team helps anticipate risks, manage symptoms, and protect both maternal and fetal health.

Pregnancy and heart disease research

Our program is grounded in research that advances care for people with heart disease during pregnancy. By studying pregnancy-related cardiovascular, our team helps translate discoveries into safer, more effective care for patients everywhere.

Since implementing a standardized care approach, we have followed over 950 pregnancies in individuals with cardiac disease, helping inform care for patients at Mass General Brigham and beyond.

Raising awareness to improve outcomes

We are committed to improving maternal heart health through education and advocacy. By raising awareness among patients, clinicians, and communities, we help promote earlier diagnosis, safer care pathways, and better outcomes for high-risk pregnancies.

Our faculty are leaders in education and have developed national training programs for specialists in cardiology and maternal-fetal medicine. By advancing how clinicians are trained, we help improve the safety and coordination of care for patients with heart conditions during pregnancy.

High-quality reproductive care
We provide inclusive, high-quality reproductive care for people planning a pregnancy or growing their family. Your care is guided by your medical needs, personal values, and goals, with a focus on safety, respect, and informed decision-making.
We offer expert monitoring and treatment for a range of conditions, from heart conditions that have been known since childhood to new symptoms that may arise during pregnancy.
