Lifesaving care for people with heart and lung failure
If you’re critically ill from severe respiratory failure or heart failure, you need specialized care. An ECMO machine is a life support treatment that helps you breathe when you can’t breathe on your own. Our ECMO Transport Program specialists travel to area hospital ICUs, put people on ECMO, and transport them to Mass General Brigham for complex care. We serve hospitals throughout New England.

Our approach to ECMO
We provide 24/7 advanced life support when your heart or lungs need time to rest. Our team uses ECMO to oxygenate your blood while your body recovers.
Refer a patient
If your hospital doesn’t have ECMO capability, we can help. Our team comes to your hospital, provides ECMO care, and transports patients to our Lung Center to continue care.
To refer a patient for ECMO transport:
- Call 1-844-BWH-LUNG (1-844-294-5864)
- Make an online referral
Supporting heart and lung recovery
ECMO gives people with a damaged heart or lungs time to recover. With ECMO, we remove blood from the body, oxygenate the blood, remove carbon dioxide from the blood, and then return the blood to the body.
This treatment gives people the oxygen they need when their organs are too sick to get oxygen on their own.
Types of ECMO life support
There are two kinds of ECMO:
- Venoarterial supports the heart and lungs
- Venovenous is oxygenation support only for the lungs
ECMO also serves as a bridge for people with severe heart and respiratory failure before and after surgery, including heart and lung transplant.
Advanced therapies for heart and lung failure
ECMO is a temporary solution. If your heart or lungs can’t recover on their own, you may need a more permanent treatment. A ventricular assist device (VAD) can take over the pumping for a failing heart. A heart transplant or lung transplant may be an option if your organs can’t recover on their own.
